2001 1.4 automatic gearbox rpm query

    hi i have recently bought a 2001 1.4 206 auto...27000 miles on the clock..but when i took it on the motorway i noticed that to do 70mph the rpm is in excess of 4000...is this normal..? if i drive at 56mph its doing over 3000rpm
    it doesn't seem to matter what gear i select..2, 3, or drive, the car drives in exactly the same way...it gets to about 35MPH then you get a gear change but cant feel one before hand
    please help.!!!
