I've got a '91 205 XS 1.4, was just wondering what sort of price I
should expect to pay to get the clutch replaced, as it is slipping
(been on the way out for a while) after I installed a pipercross
    filter.
Also what model transmission does this car have? I've never really
    found out.

    It has an MA gearbox.
If it went to a garage you'd be looking at £100 for the clutch kit, and
maybe 3 hours labour. I'd guess £200-£250. Or if you're vaguely
mechanically confident try doing it yourself. I did when i had my XS and it
only took me about 5 hours with the help of a Haynes.

Cheers, it does look like something I'd be able to do myself, just
don't really fancy sitting out in the road freezing my arse off at
this time of year, also if I get stuck im a bit screwed ;) I'll see if
i can get hold of a clutch kit on the cheap today anyway cos £100 is a
    bit steep.
I'll let you know how it goes...

I was in the same position, but i thought sod it, and surprised myself by
getting it done so quickly, although i did have some idea of what i was
    doing.
You can probably pick a kit up (everything you'll need apart from an
aligning tool) from Euro Car Parts or similar for £70. Dont be afraid to
buy the cheaper one, i did and it worked fine (and still is AFAIK).

    Good luck!

Well...I've got all the bits, but I cant get the clutch housing to
come off, assuming I'm undoing the right bit, as haynes only shows the
BH3 unit which apparently doesn't look anything like my one. I've
taken out the 4 large allen bolts that I could find (going between the
housing and engine block) but something is still holding it together
at the bottom, cos if I shake the transmission you can see a gap at
the top, but its still firmly in place at the bottom. Any idea what
    I've missed?

IIRC there's 2 at the bottom, one at the front which should be obvious and
also one at the back that also holds a downpipe bracket in place. There are
also dowells holding the 'box in place, it could just be caught on one of
    them.

Andy try this link, www.gsfcarparts.com. I have bought a few things from
them and I dont think you will beat their prices. they have two clutches on
sale, one @ £45 and one @ £56 plus VAT. Sorry but I dont know why theres a
    difference in price?

I just bought one down my local parts store (Cablerley Auto Factors in
Farnborough) was about £60 so no great loss and went on fine in the
    end.
I've bought stuff from gsf before and been unimpressed by their
service (Sent me 1 fog lamp when order/invoice said two, and an
indicator which didn't fit. Then sent me another fog light with no
mountings which should have been with it).
Yeah it was just siezed to buggery on the dowels. Took me near enough
8 hours to get the thing off in the end with a crowbar and big metal
pole! But once it was off the actual clutch was easy to swap, and
putting it back together took about half as long.

    Thanks for the help guys!
