as my pedal was stiff and i was finding the gears a little stiff at times i
    've replaced the cable.
pedal much lighter but i have two problems.
    1. biting point now really low down was halfway before
    2. gears still stiff to engage although the low biting point won't be
    helping

any ideas before i replace the clutch?

On the 306's the cable is prone to getting corroded or dry due to it
being exposed to the road. I regularly grease it and the bearings to
keep it smooth and prevent the clutch from being very stiff. The
clutch is self-adjusting so stiff gears and a low biting point would
indicate that the adjuster is at the end of its travel and should be
replaced. If you leave it too long, you may cause some damage to the
    gearbox.
