306 Diesel Smoke problem

I've just had the glow plugs on my 306 changed and on picking it up have
noticed that it a lot more smoke is being discharged from the exhaust,
    especially at >2500rpm.

The garage had to remove the manifold in order to change the plugs. I
assume that they did something wrong when replacing it.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause of the problem?

Syptoms are excess smoke from the exhaust at >2500 rpm and accelerating
to a speed above 60 is proving very hard too.

    Thanks in advance, Dan.

Take it back sharpish and get them to sort it. Make sure you get it
seen to by their chief mechanic and not their spotty geek trainee.

Is this a turbo diesel? If so check that the rubber pipe running
from the front of the intercooler to the injector pump has been
pushed back on properly. Without that the car will refuse to go
    much above 60.

If it isn't that, then as other posters have said, take it
back to the garage as soon as possible.

Yes, I've done this already and they are being a little hopeless, saying
they can't see what the problem is and that they are going to contact
Peugeot. I don't really trust them.

Serves me right for using an unknown garage instead of my normal
    reliable one.

I'll apply a little more pressure tomorrow.

Did they really say that? The manifolds are both on the other side of the
engine. Certainly don't need to touch them to change the glow plugs.

I hope they really meant the intercooler, unless they don't know the
    difference.
Check all the pipes are connected, and try to find out exactly what they
    touched when doing this job.

    {sorry, posting via google]

I'm certain they said manifold. Either way, it looks like they removed
the large silver part on top of the engine that has the air hose
connected to it. (Apologies for severe lack of technical knowledge
    about my engine).

    Thanks for the advice.

That sounds like the intercooler. If they don't know what it is then
it's a pound to a shilling they don't know what they are doing. I
would suggest that you tell them to get somebody who does know what
they are doing to look at it at their expense or you will be paying
your council's trading standards department a visit.

And as well as that I would check the "D" seal where the intercooler
joins the inlet manifold. This can stretch and distort. Renew if in
any doubt. Also check the big inlet pipe on the offside of the
intercooler. Make sure the jubillee clip is tight.

    [snip]

So, after much head scratching, calls to a peugeot mechanic and general
bafflement, they told me that they thought my fuel (injection) pump was
shot. They deduced this because the pipe that ran back to the fuel tank
had small amounts of copper(?) in it.

They showed me this when I went to pick the car up tonight but it didn't
look like much detritus to me and I was surprised that this was the only
sign of the pump being at fault.

They told me that I would be looking at between £500 and £800 for the
part but they may be able to get my existing one reconditioned. I told
them I needed the car to get home tonight and that I would think about
what I would do over the weekend.

So they put everything back in place in order that I could drive home. I
drove home at 70 mph with no smoke and decent acceleration.

Looks like they fixed the problem. Without knowing they fixed the
    problem.....

Won't be going there again then ;)

    Google groups, mutter mutter...

Why not get a newsreader... <checks header> Oh you have. Then why is
it not possible to back up a a few messages and see it? You have got
Agent set to group messages by thread haven't you? Just click that |+>
(bad ascii version of real button) at the top of the message list. Of
course you may have it set to hide read messages in which case right
click on Unread Messages at the top of the list to select All
    Messages.

  20. Or his news server may miss some postings out which was a major failing with
the BT news servers until a couple of weeks ago when they out sourced to
    Giganews.
