    okay..

this morning. started the car.. as i pulled away the car felt like the
brakes had stuck on.. so gave it a little power and it "came loose"

little did i know.. about 2m up the driveway i dropped a pinion from
the final drive.. or at least half of it... along with various bits of
    gearbox shell..

drove 19 miles :D got to work.. and im driving along.. and 3rd starts
making a reverse gear kinda noise.... then 4th starts.. and as i get
    into work.. 2nd does..

pop the bonnet at work. and look under the car.. oil is dripping out...
so.. its at work still and i dunno what to do.. scrap it and get
another car.. or pay for a 3rd gearbox (the gearbox went about 4,000
miles ago.. and was replaced with a scrapped SRi gearbox

    K reg mark1 405 estate 1.9 litre carb

i matched up the pinion with the haynes manual. its defo from the final
drive.. tis about 3cm in diamater.. and well. i have 2 bits of it :/
so.. as its punched through the gearbox. replace the gearbox? or scrap
it for either another 405/406 (i do love the handling on the 405.. and
i belive the 406 is the same car.. just restyled/more toys)

so very gutted :( i just put 4 new wheels on it too

Its cheaper to get another g/box than it is to buy another car .it might
have problem at least you know your cars problems,so get hold of a
    second hand g.box.

yeah.. just not something i can do.. even with the help of my dad.
without renting kit. etc. haynes of course makes it look easy.. but
    i've been there before :/
garage i know will cost a arm and a leg

any ideas on rough prices of a gearbox? i'll call around the local
scrappys.. just dunno how much its gonna cost.. obviously im gonna need
    a 2litre/1.9 petrol gearbox...
