    Hi all

    I've just acquired a 1998 406 2litre estate with roof bars. I've also got
the roof box and bars for the old Xantia I used to have. These bars have
pads that bear on the roof and lock in place using holes in the door frame.
I see that the 406 has the same door frame holes with 2 holes per door. My
question is which of the two holes do I use or doesn't it matter? When I got
the bars the instructions told me to use the front holes on the Xantia
although as the holes are only an inch or so apart I doubted whether it was
    important.

I assume that the bars on the 406 est. are the fore and aft type, and those
from your Citroen are the transverse type. Will these actually fit o the
406, the back one will possibly not clear the fitting on the 406. You would
really be better off getting some universal transverse bars to fit those on
the 406, or modifying the old ones to clamp direct to the 406 bars.
Universal ones are cheap on Ebay.

You may well be right but see my sig, I'd rather pay no money at all if
possible. I'll have a try tomorrow.

    Can't disagree with that philosophy.
You might be able to use the Citroen bars and attach them to the 406 ones. I
made some cross bars once out of some 1/2 inch galvanised water pipe. I
believe they are still in use.

You were right the feet didn't fit. They were Halford's own brand and they
don't sell a fitment for the longitudinal rails. It is possible that the 406
sallon ones might fit but.... The Thule fitments were £75. So in the
interests of experiment I purchased ten 40-60mm hose clips (Jubilee style)
from Screwfix for £3.50. Place old roofbars across longitudinal ones, undo
hoseclip, thread around both bars and rethread and tighten. Repeat on same
roof bar end with another clip but run it across the previous one at 90
degrees. Repeat on other 3 ends. Works a treat and should be good for 70mph
especially if I use a ratchet tie down as well. The beauty of it is that for
£3.50 I can take another bag with me and replace with new clips when we come
home. Then I can take my time purchasing the proper fitting from ebay.
