I had mine done for 98 quid which included a new fan belt as well!
this is my local garage that does all my MOT and repairs. To be fair as
a TV engineer I repair his TV/Video etc at cost so I can't give a true
estimate but it shows what in can be done for if you then add labour.

I remember seeing an article that said what you suggested is pretty common
(amongst those who know). I'd be wary of how I'd be treated unless I spoke
    fluent French.
Maybe they finance their dealerships differently - I was driven home from my
Peugeot recently by a Service Receptionist and she explained to me that the
whole overhead of the dealer is carried by the service dept. The same
explanation of dealer finances appeared in another newsgroup the other day
in regard to the margins dealers make these days (pretty low) on new cars.

  3. Wouldnt you say that this is because theyre trying to make a new car just as
easy to buy as a 2nd hand car, they offer 0% finance and free insurance, and
some companies are making their cars even cheaper because they can carry
many more 2nd hand cars, aswell as having a monopoly on new cars.
the dealer i bought mine from owns many showrooms, and is a multi
franchiser, and has a massive new car stock; he can afford to have more cars
in his showrooms because he deals lets say in bulk!!
same old story in any business, buy in bulk, and get it cheaper!! He can
then afford to pass these savings on to the customer, and still make good
    money.
At least, thats what i think, i know others among you will have differing
    points of view.

    regards, mark.
