Can anyone provide me with any details about the fault modes in the fuel
    gauge / computer of a 2001 406?

I have had my 2.0 'S' Coupé converted to LPG, but I need to use a small
amount of petrol each trip while the gas system gets brought up to
pressure. I use only a small amount each day, so I like to keep only a
couple of gallons of petrol in the tank.

As I drive along on gas, the fuel gauge on the dashboard and the 'range
remaining' on the display both drop. Both will return to show the
correct level if more petrol is added. They also return to a true
reading if I turn the ignition key in a certain way, but I can't
determine exactly what it is I have to do.

If seems to me that the computer may see that it is supplying fuel to
the engine, but that the reading from the sender unit in the tank does
not change. I think it interprets this as a stuck float (or similar)
and drops the gauges according to the fuel it thinks it has supplied.
When fuel is added, the float rises (something a stuck float wouldn't
do), so the computer accepts its reading. The thing with the key seems
to be a manual reconnection to clear the fault mode, and it is this that
I'd like to be able to do whenever I like.

At present, I think that the fuel computer must be set to show 'range
remaining', and the ignition key turned to run (and maybe left for some
time??) without starting the engine. I can't get this to work for me
his week, so I'm stuck for an explanation. I'd be grateful for any
further info, especially if it was to do with clearing the fault mode.

I'll add any more info to my blog if I get it - the latest details are
    at http://406-coupe.blogspot.com/2007/06/fuel-update.html

    TIA
