    Hi chaps,

Have a 2001 406 HDi and was wondering if anyone has replaced any of
the bulbs in the instrument panel.

I spoke to the local peugeot garage and they say that there is only
one bulb in the whole panel whereas the only dim portion is the fuel
guage and a small part of the speedo.

Does anyone know how many bulbs there are in total as i want to
replace with LEDs (only want to strip dash once!)

    TIA

  2. as i recall there are 3 or 4 bulbs,
they are in a fitting, it wont be easy to changes them for LED's
also LED's disipate in one direction, the bulbs need to shine
omnidirectional as they sit in a piece of lexan that distibutes the
    light.

however if you manage to get results with LED'S please post them here

There's definitely more than one!! I don't know for sure but I reckon
about 6 illumination ones plus however many warning lights you have.
And don't forget the mileage one.

What they are probably saying is there is only one type of bulb used in the
display. This is probably true apart from the charge light from the
alternator which is usually a higher wattage and often the holder is
coloured red for easy identification. Don't forget this bulb is part of the
electrical charging control circuit of the alternator.

    Havent explained very well.

Basically at night when i turn headlights on, all the the dials on the dash
are usually illuminated. The fuel guage and part of speedo all dark.

Peugeot say only one bulb to illuminate whole dash (dont believe) and want
to check how many of these bulbs there are so I can try to either replace
with LEDs or replace all standard bulbs whilst dash stripped down (only want
    to do once)

    Apologies for confusion

Years ago my clock went dull. You could see the figures in daylight
but no illumination. The service agent gave me a replacement globe (no
charge!!!) and I gently levered out the clock (wide screwdriver) and
was able to work out where to put the globe, and replace the thing.
That was three years ago and it still works fine.

The Haynes manual is some help with this sort of problem. But you will
find useful information if you search this group in Google Groups -
    try 406 clock.

Whatever part of the dash has gone dark there is a good chance that
the cure is similar to the clock one. One thing I know - all the
globes are the same - small cylinders about 1.5cm long and about 4mm
diameter from memory. How many globes? More than one! The dash, like
most modern cars, uses lcd displays for most things and these need
    back-illumination - the said globes.

I had to take our 1998 306 instrument panel out to fix a dodgy speedo,
and I'm sure the instruments are similar on the 406, just a different
layout etc - they're both the same era of design.

The way it works on the 306 is there's a number of (identical) lights in
plastic holders which twist and lock into place. There's a light for
each warning light, plus a number which illuminate the instruments.
There's a large clear perspex type plastic which diffuses or channels
the light to certain areas. On top of that is a black/grey opaque
plastic sheet which is transparent and coloured in certain places -
which lets the light through. Example of this is the numbering/outline
    on the speedo.

They're easy to replace, and it was actually pain free getting the
instruments out. In the 306 it's (all screws are Torx):

Remove 2 screws at top of trim around instruments.
Remove 2 (quite deep) screws underneath steering column.
Remove top trim of steering column.
Remove screws at bottom of trim around instruments (I think there are
    some to remove!)
    Remove instrument trim.
Remove 1 screw at top, 2 screws at bottom of instrument panel.
Ease forward and find 2 latching wide connectors.
Unlatch from one end, connector disconnects as latch lifted up.
    Repeat for both connectors.
Jiggle the instruments past the steering wheel (bit of a knack to this
on the 306, involving tipping forward and sliding between radio and
    steering wheel).

It actually takes only a minute or two - probably more time to find the
    screwdrivers than to do it.
