I have a '98 406 TD, my key seems to have become unreliable as far as
operating the central locking is concerned. It will only lock/unlock
remotely 50% of the time. I have changed the batteries and cleaned the
contacts (as best I can) to no avail. My wifes key works fine. Is it a
'known' problem for the keys to become unreliable as far as central locking
operation goes? I'm betting that a new key will cost an arm and a leg.

Have you tried spraying a very small amount of contact cleaning fluid into
the tiny push button switch underneath the cover? sometimes it works.

  3. Button wears out sometimes, that is does not make true contact with the pcb. Before you order a new one open it up then give it squirt of switch cleaner [NOT WD40]
a tv engineer has some.then ask him to check contacts and fine clean then with brass brush.
It will be cheaper than a new one, expect to pay at least 80 quid at dealer, some places do them cheaper but not authorised.
Sometimes the battery terminals become corroded which is pennies to fix.A dab of conductive paint as used in repairing remote controls works sometimes.
Anyway give it a go with a TV Tech first then go from there.

    Hi All

Just to update I had a duff smd Transistor on my key's PCB. Once replaced
with a generic device it worked 100% :)
