when starting, idles HIGH (almost 3000 RPM) for about 10 minutes, then
backs down to 2000 RPM for the next half hour?

    ECM has to be reprogrammed?

    air temp sensor?

    thanks, johninmaine

High probability that the idle control valve needes replacing.

mine plays up after a long run but is ok cold. Pull off the hoses and see if
    it makes a difference.

....good idea, ...but still seems to me something with the computer
or air sensor. because right before this problem i had pulled the
bosch comp and some other fuses, looking to fix a heat problem.
the idle arm and throttle body are ok i think...but ill ask my mechanic
to look at the "IDLE CONTROL VALVE" and the hoses...

    thanks -- john

the mechanic today found bad coolant seal on the motor. this was the
reason why it was taking so much coolant and the coolant temp sensor
was sensing "hot" coolant. so, this is the start. we'll see what
happens, next we are going to clean the idle control valve.

    Hi John,
AFAIK; the DL was the low trimming model in the US 405 range... Seems it was
    pretty well equiped anyway.
Here I come with some questions :
    - Any pics for my personnal collection (mail address valid) ?
    - Were you happy with the car itself, about reliability, handling,
    comfort... ?
    - How do you get parts, are there many mechanics which agree for working on
such cars (which seems far away from the late-80's US standards) ?
I would have been interrested if I was living in the USA :-(
But having a '88 405 here is pretty fine :)

hi GT, i can send you a few pics, but to see the car is the real
    picture, its
in perfect condition no joke -- i even wax around the shock towers and
    the rest
    of the motor --

    reliability -- 7 out 10 , but its been meticulously maintained...so for
example you could have a 84 Ford Escort with same miles and same
    Reliability...

Handling -- 6 out of 10, but doesnt have the best tires...steering is
GOOD to EXCELLENT...braking is better than i thought, it doesn't lock
up or jack up in the rear very easy.....but higher speed highway
passing, i don't put it to the limit ---too many DEER up here in Maine
    -- CURVES, good BUMPS EXCELLENT

Comfort -- 7 out of 10 seats good, but the seats aren't super
-advanced ergonomically, like a saab or mercedes...

TO GET PARTS---> we go through a mechanic in NewJersey near to NY...he
has quite a few older Peugeots left and has done ALL the work on the
car...or we have to get them from FRANCE....
for example --> to redo the brakes, we needed rotors from Boston,
Calipers from California and discs from NewHampshire...

to make a long story short....I try and drive as little as I can!!
    hahaha

    take care -- johninmaine

    Hi John,
Errr... These cars usually stay in good condition. I use to wash my car (Pug
205, not exported to the US, imagine a car the same size as a VW Golf Mk2),
also around the shock towers, but never the engine, as it doesn't really get
    dirty.
Ouch... My mechanic sometimes works on an old Mercury (I don't know the
exact model), it's almost the same.

    Thanks for the feedback !
The only one thing I know from the Maine is... Stephen King :)

....by the way i believe we have somewhat fixed the high idle
    problem...the mechanic
found a bad antifreeze gasket on motor so it was slowly leaking out.
its complicated but we believe this was throwing off the whole
    system...

also it needed a new water pump.

so, if you have these HIGH IDLE problems even in warm weather don't
forget to check this COOLANT SEAL, then the IDLE CONTROL VALVE (CLEAN
IT), then the temp sensor, and then maybe RESETTING the computer...

ill let you know if it stays LOW IDLE after its done.

p.s. it also needed a water pump.

    Hi,
That was a "vicious" fail !
Resetting the ECU is pretty easy, AFAIK you just have to disconnect the
    battery for two hours.
I don't know the exact type of ECU, the Jetronic doesn't need such a reset,
    as it's no computer.
And so a new cambelt & tensionners I suppose.

----------- thanks, ill tell the mechanic to do that also at night,
    just so everything gets
reset properly with the new coolant seal....

**********> i believe it is a bosch jetronic but not sure, haven't
looked at it for a few months,...

**********> not sure, the mechanic hasn't got back to me about that,
.....after he told me it needed a new water pump , i read that the
timing belt should be replaced since you're pulling it off
anyways....but then, i read that if the timing belt is less than 20k
miles, just leave it on if you are a "low mileage" driver....and,
that's true for me, i only drive about 100 miles a week, whereas years
ago i used to drive 300 miles a day....i don't think this car could
take 300 miles a day like my mazda 323 hatchback did!! but, it will be
fine for the next 30 or 40k....i retired (gave) my mazda 323 HB 4 speed
manual to my brother at 290k miles on the original trans and 2nd
clutch!! i did however pull the motor and put in a new block, etc....

ok--- ill let you know when i get it back, as of right now im using a
78 Ford truck, which isn't so bad either....

....just wanted to update the internet database for this Peugeot 91 405
    DL "High Idle" problem.
originally, the car was idling at 3000rpm for 30 minutes even on warm
    days.

first problem was the coolant gasket on the motor was shot. replaced
that. this was why it was using so much coolant. the mechanic put in
coolant and immediately the idle went down.

checked idle control valve, this was ok and clean.

    checked engine codes, everything ok.

water pump was shot, replaced this.

timing belt replaced (because you have to take it off anyways for the
    water pump)

idle cable at front of motor, ok.

topped all coolant, trans fluid, pw fluid, etc.

with a flathead screwdriver, at the idle cable area....adjust the idle
so that it sits at 800rmp.
its the first nearest hole to the cable, you'd think its just a
mounting, but its a screw that actually adjusts the idle speed.

ECU computer, ok....i read here on the internet that the ECU doesn't
control "cold start"....so we ruled this out also...

    ....
so, bottom line looks like the REAL problem was coolant gasket on the
bottom of the motor. secondly, problem the weak water pump was
    affecting it a little also.

Hope this helps all the Peugeot owners out there...
