    Hi all,

I'm going to look at a 406 GLX - T-reg facelift. It's an HDi car.

Are there anything I should look out for other than the usual "used car"
    type of things?

    Cheers,
    Matt

A few thing to look out for!
    were do i start.
ok if the speedo is a bit jumpy then the sender at the back of the
glove box is faulty, may sem like nothing but can cost a feew quid to
    put right

if it's a showroom-car find out how long the dealer warrenty is for all
dealers in the UK must give a minimum of one months warrenty on any
used car sold. make sure that this covers you for the fuel system!
as if or when the fuel pump goes! and they do at high milage!
it can cost an arm and a leg to fix.£150 +
make sure that the remote works,

The clutches go on these cars at about 80-90k so watch out for that,
the engine diagnostic system is a nightmare when they go wrong expect
to fork out anything from £300 -£600 depending on the dealer,

The imobliser can go faulty! this is a little ring of wirte that wraps
    around the ignition switch.

one of the major problems with these cars is the fact that most of the
engine stuff goes trough a computer and this is were the problem lies
the simplest thing can go wrong and the car wont start because of it,
look out for a little orange engine shape in the bottom half of the
colum lights if this does not go out after a few seconds, then theri
    may be problems ahead
if you see the little air bag flashing on the dash then their is a plug
just under the seat at the front on both seats these little plugs can
and do come loose press them home tight and the light should go out,

cheack the boot and make sure that the spare wheel bay isint flooded
with water sometimes they can leak at the boot

  3. My advice is similar to the previous poster, but summed up in the following
    expression....

    DON'T DO IT!

I will certainly avoid 406's (and Peugeots in general) until they get their
act together and manage to sort out their extremely poor record on
auto-electrics. Why do they have so much trouble joining wires together???

if you dont have a pug, your not planning on buying one, just why the
**** are you trolling your excreties here then.

if your only comment is don't do it then go to an adidas website or
whatever you don't seem to have buisiness here. so either come up with
some sensible comment or go fucking elsewhere

    I actually like my Pug!
although Pug seems in the most part the correct word for it!

However I cannot complain to much as this car as done 177k and still
    going strong! ish,

i have seen these cars well 405 at 10 years old with no rust on them So
in some parts their a very well built carhowever the only reason you
buy a pug in the first place is because their a diesel! and get great
    MPG
my main complaint is with the computer system, the simplest thing can
go wrong! you then have to take it to a main dealer to see what the
    little orange light says,

The only thing you had to worry about with the old 405 pug diesel
    engine was keeping it cool
    and when it didnt start
change the fuel filter or fix the stopper solinoid,
Why as life with these cars become so diffcult

one of the reasons that Nato want to go to a single fuel (diesel)
system is to keep everything as simple as possible ie
a diesel engine in theaory! is very simple to start! simply remove or
jam the stopper solinoid then find a hill! put whatever in 2nd or 3d
gear turn on ignition if you have one and away you go,

Ok I have news for you Nato!!!! Dont buy a HDI engine unless you have
more computing power that it took to put a man on the moon to get it to
    start,

    I drive a HDI 80KW from '99, 220.000 kms.I have owned this car for 2 years.
Untill now I did not have much trouble. The airco has to be repaired now,
but the rest is still okay. No oil consumption and very very economic with
diesel. It has the driveability of a sportscar and is very quiet.

Thanks for the replies - I'll give it a good going over before parting with
    any cash.

My family has had plenty of Pugs (2 205's, 3 405's) so I do have a soft spot
for them. I'll make sure I try to get a good one...

    Cheers,

  9. I AM NOT A TROLL, AND DO HAVE A PEUGEOT 406. MY COMMENTS ARE MADE OUT OF
TOTAL FRUSTRATION WITH MY CAR, AND OUT OUT A 25 YEAR HISTORY AS A CHARTERED
ENGINEER WITH A PHD. PEUGEOT ELECTRICS ARE UNDER-SPECIFIED. JUST DO SOME
SUMS ON THE CONNECTOR INTO THE BLOWER FAN IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME!

AND PLEASE DON'T SWEAR, IT JUST HIGHLIGHTS YOUR LACK OF INTELLIGENCE.

    <end of rant>

I agree, I to have an engineering degree, I have replaced the heater fan
connector with a fischer connector (www.fischerconnectors.co.uk) - No
    problems at all now though.

I think peugot just got the wrong connector!, anybody could have made
the same mistake, there amazingly comfy seats more than make up for it
    though.

  11. Perhaps I shouldn't have advise against buying one, but in 30 years of
driving I have never had so many different electrical faults over a 3 year
period (at least 6 that I can recall)!

My second car is a cheap Proton of the same age, and has had NO electrical
faults in its 6 year life!
