Alternator?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Mark Atkin-Barrett, Nov 19, 2004.

  1. Last night the battery light came on and all the power was slowly draining
from my car i.e. the windscreen wipers hardly moved, the indicators and horn
stopped working...basically every thing that was electric either stopped
    working or had reduced power!!!

The problem got worse as i continued my journey.

    I drive a Peugeot 106, 1.5 diesel.

As my battery is reasonably new (and this was happening whilst moving) i
take it that my alternator needs replacing?

    Thanks in Advance

    Mark

Sounds like a major alternator fault or an earth fault.

More like an alternator, bear in mind a diesel does not need power to
function, unless you have a fancy TDI with electronic injector system. (You
    don't)

    Get the alternator tested.

Not completely correct as the stop solenoid requires power all the time to
keep things going. Don't know how far the volts need to drop till it closes
    though.
Most likely is that the brushes have worn out. A cheap fix if this is the
    case.

check all wiring first b4 alternator though
as some further up said rightly, check the earth
also check that the live supply is good to the alternator,if in doubt temp
run a wire to the alt from the battery and retest your charge rate with a
    voltmeter

I must confess to learning about diesels on tractors, so I am not familiar
with stop solenoids, but don't they require voltage to activate open and
closed, I think once they are open they do not require voltage until you
    again turn off the engine.
Tractors have a lever that you pull to stop the engine, you can turn the key
off and walk away leaving the engine running.

Being held open all of the time with electric sounds dodgy, surely it would
burn out in a very short space of time?

again, I am not questioning your knowledge, this is just the way I thought
    they worked.

    you've lost me
how did we get onto stop solenoids(which do need power to work its when
power is cut off that they stop)
but bear in mind that once working they dont req as much current to maintain
    the field
