No my friend, you are not listening. Network with other schools that have the
course description you have and inquire where to get such material. Go to
publishers that provide materials for schools and inquire there. The more time
you spend here, the less time you have to get what you need. Are you looking for
some one to hold your hand?

Don't have time to teach how to repair fully? What on earth is the value in
that?

High horse? No.

 

To put you in the picture - I have to give these lads skills and facilitate
their learning needs - I came on here to ask about learning materials, not a
run down of what I''m doing wrong and whether I can or cannot train a lad up
to be a mechanic in 12 weeks) We run short courses to keep these lads off
the street, and to get them to get the feel of working life. (getting to
work on time, how to talk to customers, how to ask questions ete etc) (there
a lot more to this than just giving them the know how on repairing cars)

It takes approx 4+ years to become a properly trained mechanic (per the
qualifications + HNC if you want to go further like I did in my early years)
I need nobody to hold my hand I have several different careers under my
belt.

As I have said a number of times I could sit back and let the cars roll in
(as the other guy did) but I want them to be learning. We don't run course
descriptions as you suggest I am there to facilitate their learning needs.
Its a sort of taster course, how to use the wheel balancer, how to use the
tyre machine, how to use the blasting machine, how to use the lift
carefully, how to use the sun machine, how to use the steam claener, and so
on these lads won't be able to take all this in, in the time period they are
with me.

Perhaps you'd be better off looking at the City and Guilds 383 in
Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles. Part 1 of that DOES cover what
you intend to teach already.

 

TBH I think there may be another way to do this. Two ideas...

1) Get an old car from a scrappies, restore it, sell it and split any
profits amongst the course.

2) Run a workshop where you do repairs on peoples cars (such as other
students/locals etc) charging them for parts only. Give each person a
job such as one on reception, one on parts etc and rotate each week.
That way they all do customer facing, some administration and some
mechanics which is what I feel you're trying to give them.

Unfortunately, 12 weeks to try and achieve what you're wanting to isn't
going to give sufficient grounding in any. The best you can do is to
give a taster.

As for online resources, there's next to bugger all I'm afraid. There's
some stuff on howstuffworks.com but that appears to be the best of it
and its Merkin orientated.

You have given me some good ideas - we do have an old fiesta in there, in
working order and I do intend to explain the electrics starting with the
battery and follow this throught to the ignition sysyem stipping the
workings down so the lads can see whats going on.
I have spent a couple of odd days checking out the garage equipment for
safety reasons, the company are very strict on this subject. most of the
equipment is in working order, Ive ordered some repairs on the Sandblaster.
a new compresser is also on order, you are right about the time scale - when
I interveiwed the lads they mention they want to strip engines down, but I
feel I need to teach them the fundamentals of how engines work first, I can
still remeber my learning days it took me a while to get my head around the
four stroke engine. (one day it clicked)
I am only there to give a grounding on working life, the other guy didn't do
much, I also need some literature on Go - Karts as that isn't my field I'm
hoping to develop a class were the lads will build their own karts even the
welding of the chassis.

relevant to your course, but contains a lot of info on production
line manufacturing and maximising profit . Ill try to dig out the exact URL

It does not matter what part of the world I am in. I gave good advise, use it or
not I don't care. You wanted to know where to get the materials, I gave you two
possibilities, get to work.

 

The advice was average - as Simon cowell would say... The education depts
work differentially in different countries, from your wordings I'd say you
where from the US...what's up are you ashamed to say?

I would suggest that the pair of you first learn how to use a Newsreader
before attempting to impart your knowledge onto any other unfortunate
soul.

Ah, I apologise then. I merely saw two top posters without the ability
to snip (not to mention some pretty poor spelling on both sides) having
a petty squabble and thought that there might be a chance to escalate it
into something more serious.

May I be so bold as to suggest insulting his parentage, as that is
always a good one to perk up a conversation
