bye bye pug

  1. after over two decades of pug driving i'm switching to Volvo.
there are two reasons for that. One is that i'm nt as often in France
    anymore as i used to.

But the main reason is that after a clutch renewal last year that has
gone from bad to worse, even after specific asked to replace the fly
wheel, and renew a coolant hose , the managed to cock up bigtime by
ruining the radiator ( two yeras old replaced) forgot to replace said
flywheel, put in a new raditator and managed to forget the mounts so
within a mile a new radiator was needed....... AND after that they
forgot to mount the bottom engine covers.... i filed a complaint
against garage bedrijf DE JONG Amsterdam ( remember that name and
avoid like the plague) Peugeot Nederland did not see any reason for me
whatsover to complainas far as they could see all went to normal
    procedure

I sold my 406HDI, drive a beaten 405 now that is to be wrecked next
week as new car arrives ( V70 D5) and the only pug i wish to keep is
my old 305D Commercial Van that has given me less grief in 540.000KM
    than a 100.000km i drove in the 406. I remember the electrical
problems due to badly costructed wire looms ( never mix copper and
iron in a loom) I remember the water pump problems after the first
cambelt change, i remember the fuel pump problems right after
rechanging the cambelt + waterpump+ tension rolers. i remember the
dasboard problems, the trim problems, brake problems( warped discs)
the seat being to short for averege dutch heights. I also remember the
ever so smoot ride trough rural France

the Volvo dealer has treatened me very nicely, and the biggest
    surpise? changing a cambelt in a V70 D5 is an hours work ( 4.5 on a
pug) and costs no more that 250 euro, belt, waterpump, tension
roller, seals and labour included. and it does about the same to the
liter as the pug did, roughly 16 Km/L

    bye bye PSA!

Farewell friend. Curiously, my next one (maybe not for a year or more yet)
is to be a Toyota RAV4 diesel. My 406 HDi has been pretty good but, like
yours, has had its expensive problems, but the later Pugs look quite
frightening - particularly the 307 and 807. Pug seem to have lost their
way somewhere. Good luck with the Volvo, I hope it is all you expect.

I was just thinking the reverse - my 407 - a diesel - seems boringly
trouble-free and I can observe a trend from my first 504, through a
505 and then, after a SAAB, a 406, all petrol, towards greater
reliability. Just as well because the last vehicle i understood
intimately was the 505. Touch wood - but I expect a good run with my
    407.
Long before I bought a diesel car, I have mentioned how my diesel farm
vehicles have lasted longer and had less problems than petrol ones.
The other important switch I made, back in the 60s, was to automatic
transmissions. All my cars and trucks since then have been automatics.
Clutches are, inherently, bound to fail at some stage - in road
    vehicles anyway.
And I suppose manufacturers still turn out the occasional 'lemon'.
Sounds as though Marc was lumbered with one.
