    Hi all,
I've recently bought a '98 3.0 V6 SE Coupe and am looking at changing
the horrible factory fitted Phillips cassette/radio system. I've been
to a few local dealers who have all said you can't simply plug in a
new stereo with and adaptor like you would with any other car.

I've been told all sorts of stories from various car audio places
ranging from you'll need remove the JBL system as it's not compatible
(which seems to work fine) to "Peugeot don't know how to wire up the
speakers properly so we'll have to do it all again from scratch!!"
Obviously, all of these are looking to extract a small fortune from
    me.

Even my local Halfords, who have always been good in the past said you
can't because of the JBL amp system etc etc...

Has anyone out there had any experience of this?? Am getting really
annoyed now, radio is driving me insane!

    Many thanks in advance,
    Prak.

Got the '98 3.0 Saloon myself. Had the stereo changed no problem. But I
don't use the cd changer as I had my own MP3 unit installed. They told me
they had to use an adapter cable, and they put a facia on to hold the head
unit. Original six speaker system was adequate so I just put my old amp and
    sub in.

The only problem was they could not connect the control stalk to the new
stereo. Apparently, If I had bought a '99 model car they could have done it.
But I am not too bothered about that anyway. Total cost to me was £50.00 for
    the facia, cable and labour.

The SE coupe comes with JBL speakers and Amp. Some people report to
have problems getting a 3rd party head unit to work with the amp.

Well, if it's a power amp with standard inputs and you have a head unit with
pre-outs, I don't think there should be any problems.

The amp doesn’t have standard inputs like an aftermarket amp such as
kenwood, alpine etc. It has it’s own multi connector with harness, I
think this is where the problem must come from. The head unit is just
the same as a non JBL system and has no pre outs, so the amp must take
a high input (not sure if that what its called) so should be able to
amplify any head unit from its speaker outputs.

If you've got the JBL setup, then don't you have a CD-changer in the boot ?

I suspect the problems come from the Remote line within the ISO block. If
the aftermarket headunit isn't sending voltage down the Remote line, then
the amp won't turn on, and you'll get no sound.

Most aftermarket units leave the remote line seperate - I rekon if you wire
it into the appropriate pin of the ISO block, then it'll all work fine.

Different system - you don't have the JBL Amp in the boot etc.

After looking at the back of the stereo myself, have finally decided to
get a dealer to do it. It appears as if the crappy factory stereo
that's installed doesn't have RCA type outputs going to the amp, think
it's more like the speaker outputs going straight into the amp. Looks
like they've have to rewire the whole car and bypass the amp
completely; the guy at the shop said the headunit I've chose is more
powerful than the amp so it won't be needed.

Shite really as it's going to cost a hell of a lot more than just
buying a wiring loom adaptor and a new stereo. French cars I
    guess.....

    Thanks for all the replies,
    Prak.
