    Warning
Make your own decisions from this information,
here's what happened to my neighbour,

    1999/2000 Citroen Xsara saloon Diesel,
Just left motorway, and pulled in to his road and "twang"
snapped coil spring on o/s/front , the sharp edge of the spring then pierced
the tyre, in this case, all this happened at low speed, so no injuries,
just vehicle damage, contacted Citroen dealer who said
Although there is a recall on Xsara Picasso, and other models,, " front
    spring collars are being fitted"

The dealer will no doubt tell you the collar is to prevent the spring
    slipping off the strut,
I think its to prevent the spring piercing the tyre, in the event of spring
    breakage,
According to the dealer, the Xsara is not included in this recall, and yet
    suffers the same defect,
anyone know of any other Xsara's breaking front coil springs and damaging
    tyres,

My sister in law had a similar thing happen to a Megane Coupe a couple of
    years ago.

I think they're quite closely related, but ICBW.

  3. It happened on an 18month old, 25k miles Ford Focus recently too - my mate
was driving but only about 30mph, fortunately.

I have spent 35 years in the motor trade, in all that time I suppose I have
replaced 8 or 10 broken coil springs, but in the last 3 years I have
    replaced around 25 to 30, springs ?
poor quality metal and speed bumps (traffic calmers) perhaps,

Happened to my son's Berlingo. Pulled away from house, O/S spring broke
and went through tyre. Whilst it was being winched onto the breakdown
truck, N/S spring broke and went through tyre! The springs were under
warranty, but he had to buy the new tyres.

while I owned a Ford Windstar van in Canada, there was a recall to fit
a collar on the front springs. The recall clearly said it was to
prevent the tire damage by the broken spring. It appears as though that
is believed to be the major issue when the spring breaks.

  8. My 406 estate, both front springs snapped within a month of each other
last year but snapped "safely" at the top. When they snap at the bottom
there is a problem as the spring tapers at that end and that allows the
    end to pierce the tyre.
