fans on continuously - HDi engine

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Albert T Cone, Sep 30, 2004.

  1. Hi folks,

I know this is sort of OT, but this group is somewhat livelier than the
Citroen one, and since the cars are pretty similar (bar the suspension), I
    thought I'd ask....

The fans on my Mum's HDi engined Xantia are switching on continuously, even
with the air-con switched off, and the engine cold. The water temp gauge
does work, so the sensor that uses is fine. The aircon needs regassing,
    and is left switched off.
Any suggestions for what might be the cause of this. I know it isn't a
major problem in itself, but I wonder if there might be a temp sensor gone
    wonky somewhere, or something.

    Any help muchly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Albert

  2. Hi Albert

A common (temporary) remedy when the fan switch malfunctions is to
disconnect the plug and bridge the teminals with a wire. The switch is
usually on the radiator - check whether you won't find the disconnected plug
    nearby.
Another possibility is that the switch has failed, but I have never come
across one that failed in this fashion. Has anyone?

    Hi Ivar,

Right, I'll have a look at the fan switch. I don't _think_ it has been
disconnected - I'm sure I would have noticed, but I'll check. I'll test
the switch properly in any case.

Thanks for the reply - very helpful.

    Cheers,

    Albert
