Fules tank seal and the crap peugeot dealers

I recently took my car for a MOT and it failed on the handbrake not
working and fules tank seal leaking. As if this wasn’t bad enough I
ordered the fuel tank seal and all I got was a rubber seal which cost
    30.00 pounds!! . I thought other dealers were bad.
I took took the part to a local garage to replace it and I found out
the previous owner had used a different seal and fuel tank ring on the
    peugeot 406.
As if things couldn’t get any worse I went to the peugeot dealer and
he had to order it and it would arrive the next day!. So heres me
thinking ok I’ll book my MOt and have the seal replaced at the same
time this morninng. I go to collect the part and the parts arrived at
the dealers but the managers who have the key for the cupboard are not
in today! So I ask the guy is there any where else where there is one
and the nearest peugeot dealer who’s got it is few 100miles away. Now
the MOT can’t be done and so as you can imagine I was mighty p*****. I
told them if it costs me to pay for another MOT then I’m going to get
their manager to pay for it.
    CAR: Peugeot 406 S Reg 1998 Diesel
So here are a few queries I have:

    (1) How easy is it to replace the seal because the garage quoted one
and half hour job whereas it looked simple when I had a look at it.
    (2) The car wouldn’t start when I was at the dealers and it is leaking
diesel quite a lot. Will it do any serious damage to keep driving it?
    (3) Its also making a creaking sound on the left hand rear suspension
would that fail the MOT? I tried pushing it down and it creaks.
    (4) Will a citron part work for it?

    Thanks

If its the same as my 406 you really need a tool to do the job well, I
fabricated one from ms bar. its shaped like an upturned U, with a
vetical bar to reach into the hole. The Haynes manual suggests a
screwdriver and hammer, but its difficult to know if its threading
    down ok.

You need to get the part No from Peugeot, and then ask Citreon for it,
if they have one the part No will match.

    Thanks Tonyh

I think I’ll let the garage do it and watch them do it (To make sure
    its done properly)

Er, what were you expecting to get ?

    A new car ?
    Worse ?

Why are they bad now ?

All cars fail MOTs - that's the whole point of the test !
    Excellent service there then.
You were mighty pissed ? Er, why ? Surely they'll just do the MOT tomorrow.

For obvious reasons you can't expect your car back on the same day you take
it for MOT - what happens when it fails on something major, and they can't
fit you in for repair for 5 days ?
Why would you have to pay for another MOT ?

    To sum up :

    1. It failed on the fuel tank seal
    2. You ordered a new seal, and it only cost £30
    3. It arrived, but didn't fit, cos the previous owner used the wrong part
    4. Pug didn't bill you for the incorrect part, instead ordered you the
correct part, for delivery in 24 hours
    5. Pug will fit the part and pass the MOT within 2 days

Sounds like excellent service to me.

Although this isn’t the worst experiance I’ve heard of, you should be
able to expect a high level of competance (i.e. telling you the
manager isn’t in or not locking your part away in the first place)
    from a main Peugeot dealer.

And I know all about Peugeots extortionate prices on parts that have
to be specific; has anyone ever got the price on a new rear caliper
    for a 205 1.9GTi? £250 from peugeot or £45 for a genuine bendix from
    an independant.

Personally I’d have taken it to an idependant specialist because they
normally charge around half Peugeots £50 per hour.

Although you’re legally entitled to drive your car to garages to get
an MOT I’d be careful as diesel is very dangerous if spilt on the
road; ever seen the areas where it’s happened and they have to cordon
off that part of the road for about 3 months? Although it can be
cleaned up it seems to be too expensive to do unless completely
    neccesary.

    I don't understand !

Why are you mad, and why do you think your dealer is crap ?

From what you've typed here, they've give you excellent service.

What are you unhappy with ?

I'm a bit confused, Saj. So the 406 had previously been repaired and
the wrong seal had been used?

wouldn’t you be a bit disappointed if you paid for the something and
its arrived but nobody can give it to you? I don’t blame the guy who
dealt with the query but the managers who allowed this to happened as
this caused me to wait 3 days for a re-test and book some time off
work to have it done. I’m sure if you were in me situation you
wouldn’t be happy! The guy also had my number. The guy who ordered the
part actually saw what kind of seal it had before he ordered it.

    Thanks

Yes, but it's hardly the end of the world ! Surely it just meant you got the
    part the next day ?
Ah, now that's slightly more serious I suppose.
Then I would flatly refuse to pay for the incorrect part. They ordered it -
it's upto them to get it correct !

Thats why I didn’t move it from garage when I realised what the
previous owner had done. I’ve nearly skidded and hit a barrier once
when going round on a roundabout where there was diesel spilt.
What the previous owner did was a used a citron part and then cut the
ring to make it bigger which meant it wasn’t eveninng sealing the
    diesel.
After going to the peugeot dealer 8 times and taking the part that
the previous owner had tried to fit we found a match. Guess what !
That was the part I told him to order when I came the first time but
he said it was too small for my car. Next time I should trust my
instincts as then at least I can only blame myself for for doshing out
£50 and not getting it back. I’ve got the fuel tank now sealed and
hopefully no more hassles althouth the dealer said it was a common
fault. So I’ll be looking under car for the next few weeks. I’m
contemplating writing to trading standard to do with the fiasco of the
fuel tank seal and my 2 days taken off work to sort this out.

    Thanks
