When i turn the ignition key (before the engine fires)a noise comes from
the engine, sounds like someone drilling a hole in a wall in the house next
door!!.. Its worse on cold starts, is this nomal.? what is it?

Lift the bonnet, and turn the key to the normal position (without
turning the engine over) and listen. Does it sound like it's coming
    from just behind the radiator?

I had a loud rasping sound as described above on my 306 for a short
while. IIRC, the Peugeot mechanic said it was a bi-metallic strip in
the diesel pump. He said it wasn't causing any problem, and as my car
wasn't covered by a warranty at the time, it didn't seem worth
spending money on it. The noise went away after a few months.
