    I have bought a 1996 306 XSi (5 door, 8 valve) about a year ago, which
I enjoy driving - its a second car, but I find I drive it more than
    the 'main' car.

Its currently idling at about 15,000, which seems a bit fast. The
water temperature guage never moves from the bottom - should it?

Its also a bit noisier than I expected - is there some sound proofing
    that should be replaced?

I don't want to spend a lot of money on the car, or make it into a
boy-racer, but are there any simple modifications that would make it
more comfortable / better for driving?

    Thanks
    Rich

It's currently idling at 15,000 surely you mean 1500? Being as the rev
    counter only goes to 7000.
When warm the water temp should be around the 80-90 mark.
Sound proofing, how about some ear plugs?

Thanks, yes 1500. I will get the gauge checked - its probably got
    disconnected.

It sounds as though there is some sound dampening material missing
around the bulkhead, but there doesn't seem to be anything missing. Is
noise a common problem with 306's?

Well, I have a 306 diesel, and that's not that loud inside, so I would think
that either you have very acute hearing, or your car is noisier than it
    should be.
On the temperature issue, you might have a dud themostat, which would cause
the engine to take a very long time to warm up.

check the rubber grommet at the bottom of the steering column hasnt come
    away
this would give you quite a lot of noise and i have seen it b4 on the 306
