i think your find it puts air into your servo.which helps with your
brakes.so you dont have to stand on the pedal.

    Hi Chris
Yeah I see a little pipe running front this switch to the servo but
there's also another pipe that runs from the switch then across the
    head down towards the turbo?
Just been informed it could be something to do with the waist gate
    valve on the turbo!!
and could be causing the smoke problem (could life be that simple I ask
    myself)

You are looking at the vacuums system that actuates the turbo. This is
controlled by a solenoid switch. The vacuum system starts at a vacuums pump
on the cylinder head, it then feeds the servo to improve your braking , it
then feeds the cold start device that acts like a choke on a diesel operated
by solenoid valve, the last item in this circuit is the accuator for the
    turbo again a solenoid valve.
The pipe that usually fails is the one to the cold start device. Failure of
these pipes will also cause braking problems as the servo does not receive a
    full vacuum.
If the pipe you refer to is broken your turbo will not be cutting it at 2000
    RPM.

found a broken pipe on a solenoid type thing at the rear of the engine
I've been told feeds the brake survo and the turbo for cold starts.
its an item that has 3 areas for pipes to run from but I can only find
two pipes? any idea what or where the third one should go.
am now fitting new injectors and the first injector has a wire running
from it but isn't plugged into anything? have had a good look round the
engine area and cant find anyware it should plug into? any suggestions

Had another thought, the 406 uses 2 things to improve emissions in the UK
    1) a spring chamber attached to the air cleaner box this prevents flooring
the throttle and causing black smoke. Has the throttle cable been replaced
and this spring unit left out.
    2) an air damper on the pump itself. Again reduces the ability to floor the
throttle and produce smoke. With the age of these models I doubt if this
unit is working and can be removed with no ill effects unless you floor the
throttle. These are very costly to replace.

    Hi Mike
Thanks for the info ill get looking.
I've noticed that the car has an intermitent knock when cold and comes
and goes? I've been told its a diesel knock!! could all this hasle with
smoke be an air getting into the system??

My 406 1.9 TD sounds like a tractor until the oil warms up then quietens
down. I have had it since new and it has always been like this.
There are two places air can get into the system.
    1) into the fuel. This will usually cause starting problems.
    2) into the air intake system this usually causes a whistle which varies
    with engine revs.
