It depends on the car / age etc.

Safest solution is to have the car towed to a garage and the contents of the
    tank drained.
Don't try to start the engine

I think you have been a little alarmist about motorists putting petrol in
diesel-powered cars. In 1978 I bought a Golf diesel and the instruction book
recommended adding up to 30 per cent petrol to prevent waxing in cold
    weather.

a.. You are talking about old technology. If you put petrol in the diesel of
a modern Mercedes or BMW, it can destroy seals and necessitate a replacement
fuel system that might cost up to £5,000.

    Good luck

    You don't say which diesel.

How much diesel was there in the tank before she put the 20 litres of
petrol in? How far has it been driven since? Do you know anybody with
a petrol engined mower or a two stroke petrol engined M/C?

The easiest safest and most expensive solution is to get a garage to
drain the tank and dispose of the contaminated fuel.

And if it is an older styler 306 diesel the whole back seat has to come out
to remove the tank for draining :-(

    Been there.

    Hi,
    ?
Remove outlet pipe (rubber hose between tank & steel pipes), the fuel will
    fall on its own.

If you put diesel in car that runs on petrol... to a 1/5 ratio... it will
still run.. Put one drop of gazoline in a car that runs on diesel you will
have to drain the entire tank.
If the rest of the tank is empty.... you could fill it up..... put 20 liters
is risky.... put a hose in it and suck most of it out (put the end of the
hose lower than the bottom of the tank and get the flow started by
sucking... once it flows it flows). You should be able to get most of it
out. Then just fill it up, and smoke up the street for a couple of days :)

    NO!!!

disconect the fuel hose take two large jerrycans to put the
petrol/diesel and then if you hotwire the stop solenoid on the diesel
pump the juice pumps right out!

a little residu of petrol wont kill your engine, but take as much out
as you can, then fill up with diesel and pump some more out to make
sure the petrol is all out.

reconnect all hoses, replace the feul filter

make sure 99% off the air is out the fuel system, then
    start engine.

    another way

take 3 metres garden hose put it slowly! in the tank
suck the feul up and let it flow out.
if it flows then slowly! pul the hose a litle up so you wont mix the
diesel with the petrol ( petrol is on the upper side in the tank)
this way the first the deisel will com out and eventually the petrol.
if there was only little diesel in the tank then put some 10 litre
diesel in before and leave it for a day to seperate..
if all done fill up with diesel go brush your teeth (twice) take a
bath start engine go to pub

both ways you wont have to take out the backseat of your 306
    twice on my mothers 306

Nonsense. Some specific diesel engines do have problems with petrol
reducing the lubricity of the diesel, or with damage to seals, but in
general diesel engines will run without damage on anything up to a 15-20%
petrol content. In the olden days, before winter diesel was common, people
used to mix a small amount of petrol in the diesel to stop it waxing.

Apologies I should have explained - my tank had to come out completely
because the Peugeot dealer messed up big time by forgetting to fit a seal
to the level indication sender unit so when the tank was refilled it
overflowed flooding the top side of the tank with diesel. They had to
remove the tank to steam clean it.

I put £20 petrol in my diesel, it ran a bit strange before I
realized what had happened. I filled the tank up with
diesel and ran it as normal. Topped it as soon as I could
get £5 worth in did that for several times hten ran it down
to a quarter then filled it up. It ran Ok and still does.
I did this during the new year.

I have also been told that putting oil in will also help the
    lubricity of the petrol.
