Remote key question (from the UK)

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Chrisssssss........., Oct 3, 2005.

  1. The spare remote keys are faulty on both our cars: a citroen Zsara and a
    Peugeot 306.

I have been quoted the staggering amount of £136 just to replace one (which
    includes coding, searching and labour!).

Surely someone somewhere is able to supply a key and code it cheaper than
    this?

    Any advice appreciated.

The plips are about £70. The search I presume is for the transponder
code which your dealer is charged for by the keycentre around £15, so
passes this on to the customer. Coding the key can take 10 minutes on
    up to 30 minutes.
You could try and get a plip from a scrappie and take that along to be
coded. That will save you £70 minus whatever the scrappie charges. You
will still need the transponder code. Do you not have the credit card
sized plastic security from when you bought the car?
This all applies to the Zsara as well.

    Many thanks for the suggestion..

I don't have the plastic security (I bought the car second-hand recently).
Could I still buy the plip from a scrappie and then get it coded?

Only Pug and Citroen do these remotes as far as I know. I was in a
similar position and could not find any aftermarket remotes.
I bought the remote and programmed it myself - very easy, takes
    seconds. Try these sites:
    www.peugeotdiesel.com
    or www.citroendiesel.com
    for the programming instructions.

Very helpful by the look of these sites. I've copied the instructions. Does
this mean that I could get any old remote key to fit my model, then change
the actual key part, then programme it as per the instructions?

    Thanks, Chrissss.......

Yes, you can use any remote, new or secondhand. The metal key part just
pulls out when the case screw is removed. If it's a post 98 model
(Phase II facelifted 306) then also move over the little grey bit of
plastic that sits near the metal part of the key - that's your
transponder chip which works with the immobiliser so you can start the
    car.

Depends what you originally meant by faulty. If they won't open the
car only, then the above will work. If they won't start the car then
you WILL need to get them configured at your dealer. You will need the
transponder code and your dealer will get it for around £15

Many thanks. My Citroen key will neither unlock the car doors nor start the
car (as the immobiliser is still on).

Very helpful advice from all. Much appreciated. Chrissss......

You could also try Ebay - I recently got a replacement for my Xantia
from there (£20). I had to pay Citroen for the code (About £15) and
then reprogrammed it myself. Way cheaper than the Citroen Dealership.
