RHZ 2.0TD (In a 2000 Grand Vitara) Fuel Problem

Gidday from New Zealand, got a 2000 Diesel Suzuki Grand Vitara with a RHZ 2.
0TD Peugot Diesel Common Rail engine, been great in the 3+ years since I got
it but now has just developed a problem when running at normal temp it loses
most of its power suddenly at speed or on a hill etc, this happens in small 1-
2 sec bursts and goes normal than happens again, if you don't push it it
seems fine and theres no engine light coming up when it happens....

Its one of the first GV's with this motor, has anyone got any idea's to whay
is causing this? my usual mechanic says its something to do with the fuel
delivery as it appears to be starving the motor. I haven't found a workshop
manual for it anywhere, theres not many of these in NZ.

I'm going to have to book it into Suzuki to see if the engine computer is
giving any fault codes.

 

Firstly, any Peugeot manual covering that engine might help, but they are so
complex that reading the codes is the best way forward.
Sounds like there could also be a problem with the EGR system. The valves
have been known to cause this sort of problem.
You could have a look at this forum as many of these sort of faults are
mentioned, though it might take a little time to trawl through.

Yep Andrew (Mechanic had a good look at that and it appears that its been
disabled by a previous owner which makes him thinks its a fuel pressure
problem ie the electric fuel pump

 

i hope this is wrong but it sounds similar to a common problem on the early
common rail 406's (including mine). The fault occurs when the electric
lift pump, in the tank, starts to wear out. It allows metal filings to go
into the fuel system. Mine went at 90,000 miles but others on this group
have reported the same problem at far lower mileages (under 30,000). Yours
being a Suzi, it may not suffer from this problem but it is probably worth
checking the fuel filter for any signs of metal particles just in case.

 

Do you know if it has a Bosch or Siemens high pressure pump. There is a
lable on the fuel rail. The Siemens does not have the lift pump in the tank.
All the pressures involved in the system are listed in the forum I mentioned
above.
Have a look in the fuel filter. If indeed there are metal particles in the
bottom, then the lift pump in the tank is on it's way out. Change it and
clean out the filter housing very carefully. If any of those particles get
into the high pressure pump you are in for a very big bill.

 

OK I took it into Suzuki and they read the codes and stuff, no faults, it
then went to a diesel specialist I sometimes use for the harder stuff that
needs doing that my usual mechanic can't do.

Turns out the fuel tank was full of milky stuff, this is water in the diesel
or something, the diesel we get over here is sh#t, so that was drained and
the system flushed, he checked everything else and it looked ok. I've
bookmarked this forum thanks for all your help.

now to fix the cruiser in the garage for the 4wd trip next week
