rotor arm + resitor

    pug 205 1.6 gti

    A mechanic has told me that the resistor on the rotor arm under the
    distributor cap may be malfunctioning. I can't find any reference to a
    resistor in the workshop manual. Am I being taken for a ride?

    pug has electronic ignition

    ps could any such malfunction account for backfiring and pops under the
    bonnet?
